DAME KELLY HOLMES OLYMPIC ATHLETE
Kelly Holmes, an iconic British middle-distance runner, overcame adversity to become a symbol of perseverance and triumph. Born in 1970 in Kent, she discovered her passion for running at 12 and excelled in her teens, becoming the mini youth Olympic Champion at 17. Despite her athletic success, Kelly chose to join the British army at 18, serving as an HGV driver and Physical Training Instructor.
When returning to professional sports in 1992, she faced recurring injuries that led to periods of depression. However, her resilience and determination never wavered. In 2004, Kelly achieved a historic feat at the Athens Olympics, winning gold in the 800m and 1500m events, the first Briton to do so in over 80 years. Her victories earned her BBC Sports Personality of the Year amongst numerous other accolades.
