James Cleverly is a British politician and former Foreign Secretary.
James Cleverly is one of the few ministers in modern British politics to have served as both Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary. His career spans the military, business, and local and national government, giving him a distinctive perspective on leadership, strategy and decision-making at the highest levels. Having navigated some of the most volatile periods in recent political history, he offers sharp insight into both domestic and global affairs.
After an injury brought his full-time military training at Sandhurst to an end, James continued to serve in the Territorial Army, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. More About James Cleverly
James’s move into electoral politics began with his election to the London Assembly, where he held a number of senior positions, including Chair of the London Fire Authority. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing strategy, budgets and organisational performance within one of the capital’s most critical public services.
In the national government, James held responsibility for key areas including security, policing and immigration as Home Secretary. As Foreign Secretary, he led UK diplomacy through a series of defining global events, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Sudanese civil war, the Israel–Hamas conflict, and the evolving UK–EU relationship.
His ministerial experience also includes extensive engagement across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, a tenure as Education Secretary, and a central role in political strategy as co-chair of the Conservative Party’s 2019 General Election campaign.
